The AQI is used to report information about the most common air pollutants, including particulate matter (PM2.5 or PM10) and ozone.

Air Quality in the bay area is monitored and regulated by the Bay Area Air Quality Management District. The District also runs the Spare the Air program. See the five day air quality forecast. If air quality is forecast to be unhealthy, a Spare the Air Alert will be called. The alert will be in effect the entire next day, for a full 24 hours. Y ou may have noticed PurpleAir and AirNow.gov giving different Air Quality Index (AQI) values for your zip code. For example, on August 21st, when I checked these sites, the AQI given on AirNow.gov for the 94720 zip code of Berkeley was 107.
